Depending on the direction you&#8217;re feeding the wood into the tool &#8212; or pushing the tool across the wood &#8212; you  could be cutting &#8220;uphill,&#8221; climbing the grain slope, or &#8216;downhill,&#8221; neatly shaving the layers of grain. Cutting uphill often results in chips and tear-out &#8212; the tool wants to lift the layers of grain.
